Overboard
Bárður Oskarsson

17 August - 20 October

The exhibition, Overboard, presents recent works by the Faroese artist, illustrator and award-winning children's author Bárður Oskarsson (b. 1972).

Oskarsson's art focuses on the body in all its aspects. He re-
leases them from their physical "normal state" and throws them overboard, both literally and figuratively.

His characters are deformed and distorted, often grotesquely. Each figure has let go of itself and allowed itself to fall over the railing of civilisation, and it seems like all kinds of repressions and blunders have left their mark on the body in the form of excrescences and extra limbs, or missing body parts.

But humour, subtlety and the human aspect are accompanying the omnipresent brutality and loathing. Hence, sympathy breaks out of the cruelty and absurdity, and prompts a conciliatory smile from the viewer.

Bárður Oskarsson studied at the School of Visual Arts and has presented his works in art exhibitions both on the Faroe Islands and in Denmark. Since 2004 he has published five children's books, many of which have been honoured with Nordic and International prizes.
